We’ve all been in front of a door already and couldn’t open it because the lock was blocked… Today, WD-40 explains how to fix a seized lock! Simple and quick, it will only take you a few minutes for lasting effectiveness; explanations…
Before going directly to the explanations about how to fix a seized lock, it is important to understand the structure of a lock mechanism. A lock consists of six elements:
In addition to these six elements, you can complete your lock with a latch and/or a padlock on your door. This will strengthen the security of your door. These two elements also require maintenance for effective safety over time.
A lock, like any object, wears out over time. Several factors come into play. First, the number of uses of your lock. The more you use it, the faster it will get damaged.
Other factors also come into play; an outdoor lock will tend to damage faster than an indoor lock due to weather conditions: rain, cold, heat, … Indeed, humidity and temperature changes can damage your lock mechanism.
Added to these factors are dirt, such as dust, dirt or any other residue (oil, grease…). All these factors must be taken into account when maintaining your locks in order to improve their lifespan and efficiency.
The ideal way to fix a seized lock is to use a lubricant. WD-40 offers several solutions to maintain your locks: WD-40 Multifunctional Product, WD-40 Specialist Locks Lubricant or WD-40 Specialist PTFE Dry Lubricant. Each of them has its advantages and can therefore meet your lock maintenance needs.
Contact local distributors to know if one of these three products is available in your country.
For quick and punctual lock maintenance, a multi-purpose lubricant such as the WD-40 Multi-Use Product will do the trick; its five functions will allow you to wick away moisture, loosen and / or unblock your lock in a few sprays into the mechanism.
In the case of frequently used locks, we recommend more specialized lubricants for better efficiency. The WD-40 Specialist Lock Lubricant has been specially designed to maintain all types of locks. Its formula is reinforced with anti-corrosive agents and contains an active lubricant in order to avoid damage marks on the key bit and thus prolong the protection of the metal parts that make up the lock. This product is ideal for locks used at a high frequency and is perfectly suited for professionals such as maintenance managers, locksmiths, or any professional in charge of frequent maintenance of locks parks.
Finally, to fix a seized lock in environments subject to dust and other dirt such as workshops, factories, construction sites, we advise you to use Teflon-based products. For this purpose, we offer you the WD-40 Specialist Dry PTFE Lub; due to its Teflon formula, it is perfectly suitable for locks in contact with a lot of dust and other dirt. The product, once applied in the mechanism, will create a dry protective film thus avoiding the deposit of dust, dirt or oils.
No matter which product you choose to use to fix a seized lock, the use remains very simple. It will only take a few minutes and no disassembly of the lock is necessary.
Using the extension tube, spray the product inside the mechanism. Then insert the key into the lock. Then lock/unlock the mechanism several times so that the product penetrates as well as possible. Repeat the action as many times as you feel necessary.
Most of the time, this action will only be necessary once or twice a year; everything will depend on external factors and the number of uses of the lock.
Last little tip: WD-40 Multi-Use Product and WD-40 Specialist Locks Lubricant are very effective when your locks are blocked by frost in winter as previously explained, simply spray the product into the mechanism to unblock it from the gel.
You have keys in hands, it’s up to you now!
